[572] Bhikkhus, a faithful laywoman, rightly imploring her only daughter, dear and agreeable, would implore her thus: "Dear, may you become like Khujjuttarā the laywoman and Nandamātā of Veḷukaṇḍaka." This, bhikkhus, is the scale, this is the measure for my female lay disciples, namely Khujjuttarā the laywoman and Nandamātā of Veḷukaṇḍaka. "But if, dear, you go forth from the household life into homelessness, may you become like the bhikkhunī Khemā and the bhikkhunī Uppalavaṇṇā." This, bhikkhus, is the scale, this is the measure for my female disciples who are bhikkhunīs, namely the bhikkhunī Khemā and the bhikkhunī Uppalavaṇṇā. "And, dear, while you are still a trainee (sekha) who has not attained the mind's goal, may gain, honor, and praise (lābhasakkārasiloka) not overtake you!" If, bhikkhus, gain, honor, and praise overtake a bhikkhunī while she is still a trainee who has not attained the mind's goal, that becomes an obstacle for her. So dire, bhikkhus, are gain, honor, and praise … Thus, bhikkhus, should you train yourselves. The fourth.
