[590] Bhikkhus, just as a she-mule conceives to her own death, conceives to her own ruin — even so, bhikkhus, gain, honour, and fame (lābhasakkārasiloka) arose for Devadatta to his own death; gain, honour, and fame arose for Devadatta to his ruin. So terrible, bhikkhus, is the gain, honour, and fame that has arisen … Thus indeed, bhikkhus, should you train yourselves.
