[598] "Here, bhikkhus, having encompassed mind with mind, I understand a certain person thus: 'This venerable one would not knowingly speak a deliberate falsehood (sampajānamusā) even for the sake of his father [to be expanded in full] … even for the sake of his brother … even for the sake of his sister … even for the sake of his son … even for the sake of his daughter … even for the sake of his wife.' Yet on a later occasion I see him, overcome by gain, honor, and fame (lābhasakkārasiloka), his mind (citta) overwhelmed by it, knowingly speaking a deliberate falsehood. So dreadful, bhikkhus, are gain, honor, and fame — bitter, harsh, an obstacle to the attainment of the unsurpassed security from bondage (yogakkhema).
"Therefore, bhikkhus, you should train yourselves thus: 'We will abandon gain, honor, and fame that have arisen; and gain, honor, and fame that have arisen shall not persist obsessing our mind.' Thus indeed, bhikkhus, should you train yourselves."
