[61] The Blessed One said this: "And what, bhikkhus, is dependent origination (paṭiccasamuppāda)? With birth as condition, bhikkhus, there is aging and death. Whether Tathāgatas arise or whether Tathāgatas do not arise, that element (dhātu) still persists — the stableness of dhammas (dhammaṭṭhitatā), the fixed course of dhammas (dhammaniyāmatā), specific conditionality (idappaccayatā). The Tathāgata fully awakens to that and penetrates it. Having fully awakened to it and penetrated it, he declares it, teaches it, makes it known, establishes it, discloses it, analyzes it, and makes it plain; and he says, 'See!' With birth as condition, bhikkhus, there is aging and death … With existence (bhava) as condition, bhikkhus, there is birth … With clinging (upādāna) as condition, bhikkhus, there is existence … With craving (taṇhā) as condition, bhikkhus, there is clinging … With feeling (vedanā) as condition, bhikkhus, there is craving … With contact (phassa) as condition, bhikkhus, there is feeling … With the six sense bases (saḷāyatana) as condition, bhikkhus, there is contact … With name-and-form (nāmarūpa) as condition, bhikkhus, there are the six sense bases … With consciousness as condition, bhikkhus, there is name-and-form … With volitional formations as condition, bhikkhus, there is consciousness … With ignorance as condition, bhikkhus, there are volitional formations. Whether Tathāgatas arise or whether Tathāgatas do not arise, that element still persists — the stableness of dhammas, the fixed course of dhammas, specific conditionality. The Tathāgata fully awakens to that and penetrates it. Having fully awakened to it and penetrated it, he declares it, teaches it, makes it known, establishes it, discloses it, analyzes it, and makes it plain; and he says, 'See!' With ignorance as condition, bhikkhus, there are volitional formations. Thus, bhikkhus, the actuality (tathatā) therein, the inerrancy (avitathatā), the not-otherwiseness (anaññathatā), the specific conditionality — this, bhikkhus, is called dependent origination."
