[685] He was dwelling at Sāvatthī. … "Bhikkhus, did you hear a jackal howling in the time near dawn of the night?"
"Yes, venerable sir."
"Bhikkhus, there might be in that old jackal some gratitude (kataññutā), some thankfulness (kataveditā); but there might not be in a certain one here who claims to be a son of the Sakyan any gratitude, any thankfulness. Therefore, bhikkhus, you should train thus: 'We shall be grateful, we shall be thankful; and not even a little that has been done for us shall be lost.' Thus indeed, bhikkhus, should you train."
