Suttapiṭaka · Saṁyuttanikāya · Nidānavaggasaṁyutta · Vol. 16 · Section 724

[724] This is what the Blessed One said. Having said this, the Fortunate One (Sugata), the Teacher, further said this: The khattiya is the best among people who take the clan as their standard; but one accomplished in true knowledge (vijjā) and conduct (caraṇa) is the best among devas and humans. By day the sun shines; by night the moon glows; girt in armor the khattiya shines; meditating, the brahmin shines; but all day and night the Buddha shines with splendor. The eleventh.
