[9] And what, bhikkhus, is clinging (upādāna)? There are these four kinds of clinging, bhikkhus: clinging to sensual pleasures (kāmupādāna), clinging to views (diṭṭhupādāna), clinging to rules and observances (sīlabbatupādāna), clinging to a doctrine of self (attavādupādāna). This, bhikkhus, is called clinging.
