[112] At Sāvatthī. There … "Bhikkhus, there are these five aggregates subject to clinging (upādānakkhandhā). Which five? Namely: the aggregate subject to clinging that is form, the aggregate subject to clinging that is feeling (vedanā), the aggregate subject to clinging that is perception, the aggregate subject to clinging that is volitional formations, the aggregate subject to clinging that is consciousness.
Bhikkhus, so long as I did not directly know, as it really is, these five aggregates subject to clinging in four phases (catuparivaṭṭa), for just so long, bhikkhus, did I not claim — in this world with its devas, with its Māras, with its Brahmās, in this generation with its ascetics and brahmins, with its devas and humans — to have fully awakened to the unsurpassed perfect awakening (sammāsambodhi). But when, bhikkhus, I directly knew, as it really is, these five aggregates subject to clinging in four phases, then, bhikkhus, in this world with its devas … with its devas and humans, I claimed to have fully awakened to the unsurpassed perfect awakening.
How in four phases? I directly knew form; I directly knew the origin of form; I directly knew the cessation of form; I directly knew the way of practice leading to the cessation of form. I directly knew feeling … perception … volitional formations … I directly knew consciousness; I directly knew the origin of consciousness; I directly knew the cessation of consciousness; I directly knew the way of practice leading to the cessation of consciousness.
