[116] "Bhikkhus, and what are volitional formations (saṅkhārā)? There are, bhikkhus, these six classes of volition (cetanākāyā): volition regarding forms (rūpasañcetanā), volition regarding sounds, volition regarding odours, volition regarding tastes, volition regarding tangibles, volition regarding dhammas. These, bhikkhus, are called volitional formations. With the origin (samudaya) of contact (phassa) there is the origin of volitional formations; with the cessation (nirodha) of contact there is the cessation of volitional formations. This very Noble Eightfold Path (magga) is the way of practice leading to the cessation of volitional formations, namely: right view … right concentration (samādhi). "Bhikkhus, whatever ascetics or brahmins, having thus directly known volitional formations, having thus directly known the origin of volitional formations, having thus directly known the cessation of volitional formations, having thus directly known the way of practice leading to the cessation of volitional formations, are practising for disenchantment (nibbidā) with volitional formations, for dispassion (virāga) toward them, for their cessation — they are practising well. Those who are practising well have gained a footing in this Dhamma and Discipline. "And, bhikkhus, whatever ascetics or brahmins, having thus directly known volitional formations, having thus directly known the origin of volitional formations, having thus directly known the cessation of volitional formations, having thus directly known the way of practice leading to the cessation of volitional formations, are, through disenchantment with volitional formations, through dispassion toward them, and through their cessation, liberated by non-clinging — they are well liberated. Those who are well liberated are consummate ones (kevalino). For those who are consummate ones, there is no round (vaṭṭa) by which they might be described."
