[118] Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's park. There the Blessed One addressed the bhikkhus: "Bhikkhus." "Venerable sir," those bhikkhus replied to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said this:
"Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu who is skilled in seven cases (sattaṭṭhānakusala) and a triple investigator (tividhūpaparikkhī) is called, in this Dhamma and Discipline, a consummate one, one who has lived the holy life, a supreme person.
"And how, bhikkhus, is a bhikkhu skilled in seven cases? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu understands form; he understands the origin of form; he understands the cessation of form; he understands the way of practice leading to the cessation of form. He understands the gratification (assāda) of form; he understands the danger (ādīnava) of form; he understands the escape (nissaraṇa) from form. He understands feeling (vedanā) … perception … volitional formations … He understands consciousness; he understands the origin of consciousness; he understands the cessation of consciousness; he understands the way of practice leading to the cessation of consciousness. He understands the gratification of consciousness; he understands the danger of consciousness; he understands the escape from consciousness."
