[166] Then Brahmā Sahampati, having known with his own mind the reflection in the Blessed One's mind, just as a strong man might extend his bent arm or bend his extended arm, vanished from the brahmā world and appeared before the Blessed One. Then Brahmā Sahampati, having arranged his upper robe over one shoulder and raised his joined palms in reverence toward the Blessed One, said this to the Blessed One: "So it is, Blessed One! So it is, Fortunate One! Venerable sir, the Saṅgha of bhikkhus has been dismissed by the Blessed One. There are here bhikkhus who are new, not long gone forth, recently come to this Dhamma and Discipline (dhammavinaya). Not seeing the Blessed One, there might be alteration in them; there might be change. Just as, when a young calf does not see its mother, there might be alteration in it, there might be change; even so, there are here bhikkhus who are new, not long gone forth, recently come to this Dhamma and Discipline: not seeing the Blessed One, there might be alteration in them; there might be change. Just as, when young seedlings do not get water, there might be alteration in them, there might be change; even so, there are here bhikkhus who are new, not long gone forth, recently come to this Dhamma and Discipline: not getting to see the Blessed One, there might be alteration in them; there might be change. Venerable sir, let the Blessed One take delight in the Saṅgha of bhikkhus; venerable sir, let the Blessed One welcome the Saṅgha of bhikkhus. Just as the Saṅgha of bhikkhus was assisted by the Blessed One before, even so let him assist the Saṅgha of bhikkhus now." The Blessed One consented by silence. Then Brahmā Sahampati, having understood the Blessed One's consent, paid homage to the Blessed One, circumambulated him keeping him on the right, and disappeared right there.
