[187] "Good, venerable sir," that bhikkhu … asked a further question: "What now, venerable sir, is the cause, what is the condition for the manifestation of the form aggregate (rūpakkhandha)? What is the cause, what is the condition for the manifestation of the feeling (vedanā) aggregate? What is the cause, what is the condition for the manifestation of the perception (saññā) aggregate? What is the cause, what is the condition for the manifestation of the volitional formations (saṅkhārā) aggregate? What is the cause, what is the condition for the manifestation of the consciousness (viññāṇa) aggregate?"
"The four great elements (mahābhūtā), bhikkhu, are the cause, the four great elements are the condition for the manifestation of the form aggregate. Contact (phassa) is the cause, contact is the condition for the manifestation of the feeling aggregate. Contact is the cause, contact is the condition for the manifestation of the perception aggregate. Contact is the cause, contact is the condition for the manifestation of the volitional formations aggregate. Name-and-form (nāmarūpa) is the cause, name-and-form is the condition for the manifestation of the consciousness aggregate."
