[2] Then the householder Nakulapitā, having delighted in and rejoiced at the Blessed One's words, rose from his seat, paid homage to the Blessed One, circumambulated him keeping him on his right, and approached the Venerable Sāriputta. Having approached, he paid homage to the Venerable Sāriputta and sat down to one side. As the householder Nakulapitā sat to one side, the Venerable Sāriputta said this to him: "Householder, your faculties are serene, the complexion of your face is pure and bright. Have you today had the chance to hear a Dhamma talk in the presence of the Blessed One?"
"How, venerable sir, could it be otherwise? Just now, venerable sir, I have been sprinkled with the deathless by the Blessed One through a Dhamma talk."
"But in what way, householder, were you sprinkled with the deathless by the Blessed One through a Dhamma talk?"
"Here, venerable sir, I approached the Blessed One; having approached, I paid homage to the Blessed One and sat down to one side. Sitting to one side, venerable sir, I said this to the Blessed One: 'Venerable sir, I am old, aged, elderly, advanced in years, come to the last stage of life; my body is afflicted, constantly ailing. And I do not get to see regularly, venerable sir, the Blessed One and the esteemed bhikkhus (manobhāvanīya). Let the Blessed One exhort me, venerable sir; let the Blessed One instruct me, venerable sir, in a way that will be for my welfare and happiness for a long time.'
"When this was said, venerable sir, the Blessed One said this to me: 'So it is, householder, so it is, householder! This body is afflicted, egg-like, enveloped. For one, householder, who, carrying this body about, would claim health even for a moment — what would that be other than foolishness? Therefore, householder, you should train yourself thus: "Though my body is afflicted, my mind (citta) shall be unafflicted." Thus, householder, should you train yourself.'
"It is in this way, venerable sir, that I was sprinkled with the deathless by the Blessed One through a Dhamma talk."
