Suttapiṭaka · Saṁyuttanikāya · Khandhavaggasaṁyutta · Vol. 17 · Section 208

[208] On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Vesālī, in the Great Wood, in the Hall with the Peaked Roof. Now on that occasion the Venerable Anurādha was dwelling in a forest hut not far from the Blessed One. Then a number of wanderers of other sects (aññatitthiyā paribbājakā) approached the Venerable Anurādha; having approached, they exchanged friendly greetings with the Venerable Anurādha, and when they had concluded their courteous and amiable talk, they sat down to one side. Sitting to one side, those wanderers of other sects said this to the Venerable Anurādha: "Friend Anurādha, a Tathāgata—the highest person, the supreme person, the attainer of the supreme attainment—when describing him, a Tathāgata describes him in terms of these four cases: 'The Tathāgata exists after death,' or 'The Tathāgata does not exist after death,' or 'The Tathāgata both exists and does not exist after death,' or 'The Tathāgata neither exists nor does not exist after death.'" When this was said, the Venerable Anurādha said this to those wanderers of other sects: "Friends, a Tathāgata—the highest person, the supreme person, the attainer of the supreme attainment—when describing him, describes him apart from these four cases: 'The Tathāgata exists after death,' or 'The Tathāgata does not exist after death,' or 'The Tathāgata both exists and does not exist after death,' or 'The Tathāgata neither exists nor does not exist after death.'" When this was said, those wanderers of other sects said this to the Venerable Anurādha: "This bhikkhu must be newly ordained, one not long gone forth; or if he is an elder, then he is a fool, incompetent." Then the wanderers of other sects, having disparaged the Venerable Anurādha with the charge of being newly ordained and with the charge of being a fool, rose from their seats and departed.
