[215] On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Rājagaha, in the Bamboo Grove, the Squirrels' Feeding Ground. Now on that occasion the Venerable Vakkali was dwelling in a potter's dwelling — afflicted, in pain, gravely ill. Then the Venerable Vakkali addressed his attendants: "Come, friends, approach the Blessed One; having approached, pay homage in my name with your heads at the Blessed One's feet, saying: 'Venerable sir, the bhikkhu Vakkali is afflicted, in pain, gravely ill; he pays homage with his head at the Blessed One's feet.' And say this: 'It would be good, venerable sir, if the Blessed One would approach the bhikkhu Vakkali, out of compassion.'"
"Yes, friend," those bhikkhus replied to the Venerable Vakkali, and they approached the Blessed One; having approached … they said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, the bhikkhu Vakkali is afflicted, in pain, gravely ill; he pays homage with his head at the Blessed One's feet, and he says this: 'It would be good, venerable sir, if the Blessed One would approach the bhikkhu Vakkali, out of compassion.'" The Blessed One consented by silence.
