[217] Then the Venerable Vakkali, not long after the Blessed One had departed, addressed his attendants: "Come, friends, lift me onto the bed and carry me to the Black Rock (Kāḷasilā) on the slope of Isigili. For how could one such as I think it fitting to die inside a house?" "Yes, friend," those bhikkhus replied to the Venerable Vakkali, and having lifted the Venerable Vakkali onto the bed, they carried him to the Black Rock on the slope of Isigili. Then the Blessed One dwelt for that night and the remainder of that day on Mount Gijjhakūṭa. Then, when the night was far advanced, two deities (devatā) of surpassing beauty, illuminating the whole of Gijjhakūṭa, approached the Blessed One … and stood to one side. Standing to one side, one deity said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, the bhikkhu Vakkali is intent upon liberation (vimokkha)." The other deity said this to the Blessed One: "Surely, venerable sir, he will be liberated as one well liberated." This is what those deities said. Having said this, they paid homage to the Blessed One, circumambulated him keeping him on their right, and vanished right there.
