[220] Then those bhikkhus approached the Blessed One; having approached, they sat down to one side. Sitting to one side, those bhikkhus said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, the bhikkhu Vakkali is afflicted, in pain, gravely ill. He venerates the Blessed One's feet with his head, and he says this: 'Venerable sir, I do not doubt that form (rūpa) is impermanent; I have no uncertainty that whatever is impermanent is suffering (dukkha); I have no uncertainty that with regard to what is impermanent, suffering, and subject to change (vipariṇāmadhamma), there is in me no desire (chanda), lust (rāga), or affection (pema). Feeling (vedanā) … Perception (saññā) … Volitional formations (saṅkhārā) … I do not doubt that consciousness (viññāṇa) is impermanent; I have no uncertainty that whatever is impermanent is suffering; I have no uncertainty that with regard to what is impermanent, suffering, and subject to change, there is in me no desire, lust, or affection.'"
