[222] On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Rājagaha, in the Bamboo Grove (Veḷuvana), the Squirrels' Feeding Ground (Kalandakanivāpa). Now on that occasion the Venerable Assaji was dwelling at Kassapa's Park (Kassapakārāma), afflicted, in pain, gravely ill. Then the Venerable Assaji addressed his attendants: "Come, friends, approach the Blessed One; and having approached, pay homage in my name with your heads at the Blessed One's feet, saying: 'Venerable sir, the bhikkhu Assaji is afflicted, in pain, gravely ill; he pays homage with his head at the Blessed One's feet.' And say this: 'It would be good, venerable sir, if the Blessed One would approach the bhikkhu Assaji, out of compassion.'"
"Yes, friend," those bhikkhus replied to the Venerable Assaji, and they approached the Blessed One; having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One, they sat down to one side. Seated to one side, those bhikkhus said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, the bhikkhu Assaji is afflicted, in pain, gravely ill; he pays homage with his head at the Blessed One's feet, and he says this: 'It would be good, venerable sir, if the Blessed One would approach the bhikkhu Assaji, out of compassion.'" The Blessed One consented by silence.
