[243] Bhikkhus, suppose that in the autumn season, when the sky-god pours down rain in thick droplets, a water bubble arises and ceases upon the water. A man with eyes would see it, would ponder it, would carefully investigate it methodically; and as he sees it, ponders it, and carefully investigates it methodically, it would appear to him as empty only, it would appear as hollow only, it would appear as without substance only. For what substance, bhikkhus, could there be in a water bubble? So too, bhikkhus, whatever feeling (vedanā) there is—past, future, or present … far or near—a bhikkhu sees it, ponders it, and carefully investigates it methodically; and as he sees it, ponders it, and carefully investigates it methodically, it appears as empty only, it appears as hollow only, it appears as without substance only. For what substance, bhikkhus, could there be in feeling?
