[249] Then the Blessed One, having taken up a small lump of cow dung in his hand, said this to that bhikkhu: "Bhikkhu, there is not even this much acquisition of individual existence (attabhāvapaṭilābha) that is permanent, stable, eternal, not subject to change, that will remain the same just so for eternity. If, bhikkhu, even this much acquisition of individual existence were permanent, stable, eternal, not subject to change, then this living of the holy life (brahmacariyavāsa) for the complete destruction of suffering (dukkha) would not be discerned. But because, bhikkhu, there is not even this much acquisition of individual existence that is permanent, stable, eternal, not subject to change, therefore the living of the holy life for the complete destruction of suffering is discerned.
