[281] And what, bhikkhus, is the origin of suffering (dukkha)? It is this craving (taṇhā) which leads to renewed existence, accompanied by delight and lust, delighting now here, now there; that is: craving for sensual pleasures, craving for existence, craving for non-existence. This, bhikkhus, is called the origin of suffering.
