[324] The same setting. Sitting to one side, the Venerable Mahākoṭṭhita said this to the Venerable Sāriputta: "'Ignorance, ignorance (avijjā),' it is said, friend Sāriputta. What now, friend, is ignorance, and in what way has one become immersed in ignorance?"
"Here, friend, the uninstructed worldling (puthujjana) does not understand as it really is the gratification (assāda), the danger (ādīnava), and the escape (nissaraṇa) in the case of form; in the case of feeling (vedanā) … in the case of perception … in the case of volitional formations … he does not understand as it really is the gratification, the danger, and the escape in the case of consciousness. This, friend, is called ignorance, and it is in this way that one has become immersed in ignorance."
