[329] When this was said, the Venerable Sāriputta said this to the Venerable Mahākoṭṭhita: "'True knowledge (vijjā), true knowledge,' it is said, friend Koṭṭhita. What now, friend, is true knowledge, and in what way has one arrived at true knowledge?"
"Here, friend, an instructed noble disciple understands as it really is (yathābhūta) the gratification (assāda), the danger (ādīnava), and the escape (nissaraṇa) in the case of form; in the case of feeling (vedanā) … in the case of perception … in the case of volitional formations … he understands as it really is the gratification, the danger, and the escape in the case of consciousness. This, friend, is called true knowledge, and in this way one has arrived at true knowledge."
