[429] At Sāvatthī. "Bhikkhus, when what exists, by clinging (upādāya) to what, by adhering (abhinivissa) to what, does such a view (diṭṭhi) as this arise: 'There is no cause, no condition for the defilement of beings; without cause, without condition, beings are defiled. There is no cause, no condition for the purification of beings; without cause, without condition, beings are purified. There is no power, no energy, no manly strength, no manly exertion; all beings, all living things, all creatures, all souls are without mastery, without power, without energy; molded by destiny, circumstance, and nature (niyati-saṅgati-bhāva), they experience pleasure and pain in the six classes of birth'?"

"Bhikkhus, when form exists, by clinging to form, by adhering to form, such a view as this arises: 'There is no cause, no condition … they experience pleasure and pain in the six classes of birth.' When feeling (vedanā) exists … when perception exists … when volitional formations exist … when consciousness exists, by clinging to consciousness, by adhering to consciousness, such a view as this arises: 'There is no cause, no condition … they experience pleasure and pain in the six classes of birth.'"
