[511] Sāvatthī. The Venerable Ānanda saw … "Serene, friend Sāriputta, are your faculties (indriya); the complexion of your face is pure and bright. In what dwelling has the Venerable Sāriputta spent this day?"
"Here, friend, with the abandoning of pleasure and the abandoning of pain, and with the previous passing away of joy and grief, I entered and dwelt in the fourth jhāna, which is neither painful nor pleasant and has purity of mindfulness by equanimity (upekkhā). Yet, friend, it did not occur to me thus: 'I am attaining the fourth jhāna,' or 'I have attained the fourth jhāna,' or 'I have emerged from the fourth jhāna.'"
"It must be because I-making, mine-making, and the underlying tendency to conceit have long been thoroughly uprooted in the Venerable Sāriputta that it does not occur to the Venerable Sāriputta thus: 'I am attaining the fourth jhāna,' or 'I have attained the fourth jhāna,' or 'I have emerged from the fourth jhāna.'"
