[543] Sāvatthī. Then a certain bhikkhu approached the Blessed One; having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One, he sat down to one side. Sitting to one side, that bhikkhu said to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, what is the cause, what is the condition, whereby someone here, upon the breakup of the body, after death, is reborn in companionship with the devas of the cloud host (valāhakakāyikā devā)?"
"Here, bhikkhu, someone practices good conduct (sucarita) by body, practices good conduct by speech, practices good conduct by mind. He has heard: 'The devas of the cloud host are long-lived, beautiful, and abounding in happiness.' It occurs to him: 'Oh, that upon the breakup of the body, after death, I might be reborn in companionship with the devas of the cloud host!' He gives food, gives drink, gives clothing, gives a vehicle, gives garlands, gives scents, gives ointments, gives bedding, gives dwellings, gives lamps. Upon the breakup of the body, after death, he is reborn in companionship with the devas of the cloud host. This, bhikkhu, is the cause, this is the condition whereby someone here, upon the breakup of the body, after death, is reborn in companionship with the devas of the cloud host."
