[553] At Sāvatthī. Sitting to one side, that bhikkhu said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, what is the cause, what is the condition, why at times it rains?"
"Bhikkhu, there are deities (devā) called rain-cloud deities (vassavalāhakā). When it occurs to them thus: 'Let us delight in our own delight,' then, in accordance with their mental resolve, it rains. This, bhikkhu, is the cause, this is the condition, why at times it rains."
The Valāhaka Saṃyutta is concluded.
Its summary (uddāna):
The teaching, good conduct — these five; that on giving as assistance the fifth;
cold, hot, and cloud; the wind-cloud and rain-cloud (deities).
