[6] Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling among the Sakyans, at a town of the Sakyans named Devadaha.
Then a number of bhikkhus who were bound for the western land approached the Blessed One; having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One, they sat down to one side. Sitting to one side, those bhikkhus said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, we wish to go to the western land, to take up residence in the western land." "But, bhikkhus, have you taken leave of Sāriputta?" "Venerable sir, we have not taken leave of the Venerable Sāriputta." "Take leave of Sāriputta, bhikkhus. Sāriputta, bhikkhus, is wise, a helper of the bhikkhus, his fellows in the holy life." "Yes, venerable sir," those bhikkhus replied to the Blessed One.
