[111] Then the Venerable Sāriputta approached the Blessed One; having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One, he sat down to one side. Sitting to one side, the Venerable Sāriputta said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, the knife has been used by the Venerable Channa. What is his destination, what is his future state?"
"Sāriputta, was not blamelessness (anupavajjatā) declared to you by the bhikkhu Channa in your very presence?"
"Venerable sir, there is a Vajjian village named Pubbavijjana. There the Venerable Channa has friendly families, intimate families, families to be approached (upavajjakulāni)."
"There are indeed, Sāriputta, these friendly families, intimate families, families to be approached of the bhikkhu Channa. But, Sāriputta, I do not say that on that account alone one is blameworthy (sa-upavajja). Whoever, Sāriputta, lays down this body and takes up another body — him I call blameworthy. That does not exist for the bhikkhu Channa. Blamelessly the knife was used by the bhikkhu Channa. Thus, Sāriputta, should you remember it."
