[154] "Bhikkhus, I will teach the origin and the passing away (atthaṅgama) of suffering (dukkha). Listen to it. And what, bhikkhus, is the origin of suffering? In dependence on the eye and forms, eye-consciousness arises; the meeting of the three is contact (phassa); with contact as condition, feeling (vedanā); with feeling as condition, craving (taṇhā). This is the origin of suffering. … In dependence on the tongue and tastes, tongue-consciousness arises; the meeting of the three is contact; with contact as condition, feeling; with feeling as condition, craving. This is the origin of suffering. … In dependence on the mind and mental phenomena (dhammā), mind-consciousness arises; the meeting of the three is contact; with contact as condition, feeling; with feeling as condition, craving.
