[175] "Then, friends, listen and attend closely; I will speak."
"Yes, friend," those bhikkhus replied to the Venerable Ānanda. The Venerable Ānanda said this: "Friends, when the Blessed One had recited a summary in brief without analyzing the meaning in detail, he rose from his seat and entered the dwelling — namely: 'Therefore, bhikkhus, that sense base (āyatana) should be understood, where the eye ceases and perception of forms fades away — that sense base should be understood … where the mind (mano) ceases and perception of dhammas fades away — that sense base should be understood.' Of this summary recited in brief by the Blessed One, without the meaning analyzed in detail, I understand the meaning in detail. This, friends, was spoken by the Blessed One with reference to the cessation of the six sense bases: 'Therefore, bhikkhus, that sense base should be understood, where the eye ceases and perception of forms fades away — that sense base should be understood … where the mind ceases and perception of dhammas fades away — that sense base should be understood.'
