[203] On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling among the Bhaggas, at Suṃsumāragira, in the Bhesakaḷā Grove, the Deer Park. Then the householder Nakulapitā approached the Blessed One … Seated to one side, the householder Nakulapitā said to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, what is the cause, what is the reason, why some beings here do not attain final Nibbāna in this very life? And what is the cause, venerable sir, what is the reason, why some beings here attain final Nibbāna in this very life?"
"There are, householder, forms cognizable by the eye that are wished for, desirable, agreeable, pleasing, connected with sensuality, provocative of lust. If a bhikkhu delights in them, welcomes them, and remains attached to them, then, as he delights in them, welcomes them, and remains attached to them, his consciousness becomes dependent upon that and clings to that. A bhikkhu with clinging (upādāna), householder, does not attain final Nibbāna. … There are, householder, tastes cognizable by the tongue … There are, householder, dhammas cognizable by the mind that are wished for, desirable, agreeable, pleasing, connected with sensuality, provocative of lust. If a bhikkhu delights in them, welcomes them, and remains attached to them, then, as he delights in them, welcomes them, and remains attached to them, his consciousness becomes dependent upon that and clings to that. A bhikkhu with clinging, householder, does not attain final Nibbāna. This, householder, is the cause, this is the reason, why some beings here do not attain final Nibbāna in this very life."
