[205] On one occasion the Venerable Mahākaccāna was dwelling among the Avantīs at Makkarakaṭa, in a forest hut. Then a number of brahmin youths, gatherers of firewood, pupils of the brahmin Lohicca, approached the Venerable Mahākaccāna's forest hut; having approached, they walked and wandered round and round about the hut, loud and noisy, playing all sorts of boisterous pranks (seleyyakāni), [saying]: "But these shaveling little ascetics — menials, swarthy ones, offspring of the Kinsman's feet — are honoured, respected, esteemed, venerated, and deferred to by these people of the land!"
Then the Venerable Mahākaccāna, having come out from his dwelling, said this to those youths: "Do not make noise, youths; I will speak the Dhamma to you." When this was said, those youths fell silent. Then the Venerable Mahākaccāna addressed those youths in verses:
