[300] On one occasion the Venerable Ānanda and the Venerable Udāyi were dwelling at Kosambī in Ghosita's Park. Then, in the evening, the Venerable Udāyi emerged from seclusion and approached the Venerable Ānanda; having approached, he exchanged greetings with the Venerable Ānanda, and when the courteous and memorable talk was concluded, he sat down to one side. Sitting to one side, the Venerable Udāyi said this to the Venerable Ānanda: "Friend Ānanda, just as this body has been declared, disclosed, and made known by the Blessed One in various ways thus: 'For such a reason this body is not-self (anattā)' — is it possible, in the very same way, to declare, teach, describe, establish, disclose, analyze, and elucidate this consciousness (viññāṇa) thus: 'For such a reason this consciousness is not-self'?"
"Friend Udāyi, just as this body has been declared, disclosed, and made known by the Blessed One in various ways thus: 'For such a reason this body is not-self,' it is possible, in the very same way, to declare, teach, describe, establish, disclose, analyze, and elucidate this consciousness thus: 'For such a reason this consciousness is not-self.'"
