[326] On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling among the Sakyans at Kapilavatthu, in the Nigrodha Park. Now on that occasion a new council hall (saṇṭhāgāra) belonging to the Sakyans of Kapilavatthu had recently been built, and it had not yet been dwelt in by any ascetic or brahmin or by any human being at all. Then the Sakyans of Kapilavatthu approached the Blessed One; having approached, they paid homage to the Blessed One and sat down to one side. Seated to one side, the Sakyans of Kapilavatthu said this to the Blessed One: "Here, venerable sir, a new council hall belonging to the Sakyans of Kapilavatthu has recently been built, not yet dwelt in by any ascetic or brahmin or by any human being at all. Venerable sir, let the Blessed One use it first; when it has first been used by the Blessed One, afterwards the Sakyans of Kapilavatthu will use it. That would be for the welfare and happiness of the Sakyans of Kapilavatthu for a long time." The Blessed One consented by silence.
Then the Sakyans of Kapilavatthu, having understood the Blessed One's consent, rose from their seats, paid homage to the Blessed One, and, keeping him on their right, went to the new council hall. Having arrived, they spread the council hall with coverings so that it was covered throughout, prepared seats, set up a water pot, and raised an oil lamp; then they approached the Blessed One and said this to him: "Venerable sir, the council hall has been spread with coverings throughout, seats have been prepared, a water pot has been set up, and an oil lamp has been raised. Now, venerable sir, let the Blessed One do as he considers timely."
