[329] "And, friend, if Māra approaches a bhikkhu who dwells thus by way of the eye, Māra would surely gain an opening (otāra), Māra would gain a hold (ārammaṇa) … If Māra approaches him by way of the tongue … If Māra approaches him by way of the mind (มโน), Māra would surely gain an opening, Māra would gain a hold.
"Suppose, friend, there were a shed of reeds or a shed of grass — dried up and brittle, more than a year old (terovassika). If a man were to approach it from the eastern quarter with a blazing grass torch, the fire would surely gain an opening, the fire would gain a hold. If a man were to approach it from the western quarter with a blazing grass torch … if from the northern quarter … if from the southern quarter … if from below … if from above — from whatever quarter a man might approach it with a blazing grass torch, the fire would surely gain an opening, the fire would gain a hold. Just so, friend, if Māra approaches a bhikkhu who dwells thus by way of the eye, Māra would surely gain an opening, Māra would gain a hold … If Māra approaches him by way of the tongue … If Māra approaches him by way of the mind, Māra would surely gain an opening, Māra would gain a hold."
