[415] And what, Ānanda, is that other happiness more excellent and more sublime than that happiness? Here, Ānanda, a bhikkhu, quite secluded from sensual pleasures, secluded from unwholesome states, enters and dwells in the first jhāna (paṭhamajjhāna), which is accompanied by thought (vitakka) and examination (vicāra), with rapture and happiness born of seclusion. This, Ānanda, is that other happiness more excellent and more sublime than that happiness. Now, Ānanda, those who would speak thus: "This is the supreme, peaceful happiness and joy that beings experience" — this I do not concede to them. For what reason? Because there is, Ānanda, another happiness more excellent and more sublime than that happiness.
