[486] Bhikkhus, there are these five powers of a woman (mātugāma). What five? The power of beauty (rūpabala), the power of wealth, the power of relatives, the power of sons, and the power of virtue (sīlabala). These, bhikkhus, are the five powers of a woman. Possessing these five powers, bhikkhus, a woman abides having overpowered her husband. But possessing one power, bhikkhus, a man abides having overpowered a woman. With what one power? [1] With the power of authority (issariyabala). When a woman is overpowered by the power of authority, bhikkhus, the power of beauty does not protect her, nor does the power of wealth protect her, nor does the power of relatives protect her, nor does the power of sons protect her, nor does the power of virtue protect her.
