[57] "Venerable sir, how does one know, how does one see, so that the fetters (saṃyojana) are abandoned?"
"Bhikkhus, for one who knows and sees the eye as impermanent (anicca), the fetters are abandoned. For one who knows and sees forms as impermanent, the fetters are abandoned. For one who knows and sees eye-consciousness as impermanent, the fetters are abandoned. For one who knows and sees eye-contact as impermanent, the fetters are abandoned. … And whatever feeling (vedanā) arises with mind-contact as condition — whether pleasant, painful, or neither-painful-nor-pleasant — for one who knows and sees that too as impermanent, the fetters are abandoned. It is for one knowing thus, bhikkhus, for one seeing thus, that the fetters are abandoned."
