[580] Now on that occasion the naked ascetic (acela) Kassapa, a former lay companion of the householder Citta, had arrived at Macchikāsaṇḍa. The householder Citta heard: "It is said that the naked ascetic Kassapa, our former lay companion, has arrived at Macchikāsaṇḍa." Then the householder Citta approached the naked ascetic Kassapa; having approached, he exchanged greetings with the naked ascetic Kassapa, and when the courteous and memorable talk was concluded, he sat down to one side. Sitting to one side, the householder Citta said this to the naked ascetic Kassapa: "How long is it, venerable Kassapa, since you went forth?"
"It is thirty years, householder, since I went forth."
"But in these thirty years, venerable sir, have you attained any superhuman state (uttarimanussadhamma), any distinction in knowledge and vision worthy of the noble ones (alamariyañāṇadassanavisesa), a dwelling in comfort?"
"In these thirty years, householder, I have attained no superhuman state, no distinction in knowledge and vision worthy of the noble ones, no dwelling in comfort — apart from nakedness, the shaven head, and the brushing off of dust."
