[597] When this was said, the cavalry warrior (assāroha), a headman (gāmaṇi), wept and shed tears. [The Blessed One said:] "This, headman, is just what I could not get from you when I said: 'Enough, headman, let this be; do not ask me that.'"
"Venerable sir, I do not weep at what the Blessed One has said to me. Rather, venerable sir, for a long time I have been tricked, cheated, and beguiled by cavalry warriors of old, teachers and teachers' teachers, who said: 'When a cavalry warrior strives and exerts himself in battle, and others slay him and finish him off while he is thus striving and exerting himself, then, with the breakup of the body, after death, he is reborn in the company of the battle-slain (sarajita) devas.'
"Excellent, venerable sir! … From this day forth, [may the Blessed One remember me as one] gone for refuge for life."
