[629] Then Rāsiya the headman (gāmaṇi) approached the Blessed One; having approached, he paid homage to the Blessed One and sat down to one side. Sitting to one side, Rāsiya the headman said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, I have heard this: 'The ascetic Gotama criticizes all austerity (tapa); he categorically blames and reviles every ascetic (tapassī) who lives a rough life.' Venerable sir, those who have spoken thus: 'The ascetic Gotama criticizes all austerity; he categorically blames and reviles every ascetic who lives a rough life' — do they, venerable sir, speak in accordance with what the Blessed One has said, and not misrepresent the Blessed One with what is untrue? Do they explain in accordance with the Dhamma, so that no legitimate consequence of their assertion comes to a position deserving blame?"
"Headman, those who have spoken thus: 'The ascetic Gotama criticizes all austerity; he categorically blames and reviles every ascetic who lives a rough life' — they do not speak in accordance with what I have said, and they misrepresent me with what is false and untrue."
