[645] Therein, headman (gāmaṇi), that ascetic (tapassī) who lives a rough life, who torments and tortures himself, yet does not attain a wholesome state, and does not realize any superhuman state (uttarimanussadhamma), any distinction in knowledge (ñāṇa) and vision worthy of the noble ones — this ascetic who lives a rough life, headman, may be censured on three grounds. On what three grounds may he be censured? "He torments and tortures himself" — on this first ground he may be censured. "He does not attain a wholesome state" — on this second ground he may be censured. "He does not realize any superhuman state, any distinction in knowledge and vision worthy of the noble ones" — on this third ground he may be censured. This ascetic who lives a rough life, headman, may be censured on these three grounds.
