[71] On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Rājagaha, in the Bamboo Grove (Veḷuvana), the Squirrels' Feeding Ground (Kalandakanivāpa). Then the Venerable Samiddhi approached the Blessed One … and said to the Blessed One: "'Māra, Māra,' venerable sir, it is said. In what way, venerable sir, might there be Māra or the designation of Māra?"
"Where, Samiddhi, there is the eye, there are forms, there is eye-consciousness, there are phenomena (dhammā) to be cognized by eye-consciousness — there Māra exists, or the designation of Māra. Where there is the ear, there are sounds, there is ear-consciousness, there are phenomena to be cognized by ear-consciousness — there Māra exists, or the designation of Māra. Where there is the nose, there are odors, there is nose-consciousness, there are phenomena to be cognized by nose-consciousness — there Māra exists, or the designation of Māra. Where there is the tongue, there are tastes, there is tongue-consciousness, there are phenomena to be cognized by tongue-consciousness — there Māra exists, or the designation of Māra. Where there is the body, there are tangibles, there is body-consciousness, there are phenomena to be cognized by body-consciousness — there Māra exists, or the designation of Māra. Where there is the mind, there are mental phenomena, there is mind-consciousness, there are phenomena to be cognized by mind-consciousness — there Māra exists, or the designation of Māra."
