[763] When this was said, those wanderers of other sects said to the Venerable Anurādha: "Either this bhikkhu must be newly ordained, one not long gone forth, or else he is an elder who is foolish and incompetent." Then those wanderers of other sects, having disparaged the Venerable Anurādha with the charge of being newly ordained and with the charge of being a fool, rose from their seats and departed.
Then, not long after those wanderers of other sects had departed, it occurred to the Venerable Anurādha: "If those wanderers of other sects should question me further, how should I answer so that, in speaking to those wanderers of other sects, I would state what has been said by the Blessed One and would not misrepresent the Blessed One with what is untrue; so that I would answer in accordance with the Dhamma, and no legitimate consequence of my assertion would come to a ground for criticism?"
