[801] Then Vacchagotta the wanderer (paribbājaka) approached the Blessed One; having approached, he exchanged greetings with the Blessed One, and when the courteous and memorable talk was concluded, he sat down to one side. Seated to one side, Vacchagotta the wanderer said this to the Blessed One: "How is it, good Gotama — does the self (attā) exist?" When this was said, the Blessed One remained silent. "Then how is it, good Gotama — does the self not exist?" A second time too the Blessed One remained silent. Then Vacchagotta the wanderer rose from his seat and departed.
