[1045] "And what, bhikkhus, is heedfulness (appamāda)? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu guards the mind (citta) with regard to the taints (āsava) and to states accompanied by taints. As he guards the mind with regard to the taints and to states accompanied by taints, the faculty of faith (saddhindriya) also goes to fulfillment by development; the faculty of energy (vīriyindriya) also goes to fulfillment by development; the faculty of mindfulness (satindriya) also goes to fulfillment by development; the faculty of concentration (samādhindriya) also goes to fulfillment by development; the faculty of wisdom (paññindriya) also goes to fulfillment by development."
