[1047] Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Uruvelā, on the bank of the river Nerañjarā, at the foot of the Ajapāla banyan tree, just after his first full awakening. Then, while the Blessed One was alone in seclusion, this reflection arose in his mind: "The five faculties (indriya), when developed and cultivated, merge in the Deathless (amata), have the Deathless as their destination, the Deathless as their consummation. What five? The faculty of faith (saddhindriya), when developed and cultivated, merges in the Deathless, has the Deathless as its destination, the Deathless as its consummation. The faculty of energy (vīriyindriya), the faculty of mindfulness (satindriya), the faculty of concentration (samādhindriya), the faculty of wisdom (paññindriya), when developed and cultivated, merges in the Deathless, has the Deathless as its destination, the Deathless as its consummation. These five faculties, when developed and cultivated, merge in the Deathless, have the Deathless as their destination, the Deathless as their consummation."
