[1096] Bhikkhus, for the direct knowledge (abhiññā), for the full understanding (pariññā), for the utter destruction, and for the abandoning of these three searches (esanā), the four right strivings (sammappadhāna) are to be developed. Which four? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu, in regard to unarisen … , generates desire (chanda), strives, arouses energy, applies his mind (citta), and exerts himself for the maintenance, non-decline, increase, expansion, development, and fulfillment of arisen wholesome qualities (kusalā dhammā). Bhikkhus, for the direct knowledge, for the full understanding, for the utter destruction, and for the abandoning of these three searches, these four right strivings are to be developed.
