[1127] Even so, when such a manifest sign (nimitta) was being made by the Blessed One, when such a manifest intimation (obhāsa) was being made, the Venerable Ānanda was unable to penetrate it; he did not beseech the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, let the Blessed One remain for the aeon (kappa); let the Fortunate One (Sugata) remain for the aeon, for the welfare of the many, for the happiness of the many, out of compassion for the world, for the good, the welfare, and the happiness of devas and humans" — so much was his mind (citta) possessed by Māra.
